Premarital Affairs And Sex Determination

01 June 2013

Istriktong patubay at gabay ng magulang ang kailangan. May maseselang tema, eksenang karahasan, droga, lengguwahe, sekswal at katatakutang maaaring hindi angkop sa mga batang mambabasa.

Do children, who are products of premarital sex, tend to be females? That's the question that's piqued my curiosity for quite some time now.

During the past years, I've witnessed a baby boom. My cousin got pregnant without a ring. Two single female colleagues at work got pregnant. Also, three of the male employees in our building became newly-minted fathers without the benefit of marriage. Save for one, all the babies were female. Granted, it's a small sample size but, then again, why is this so? Fortunately, I have my own conjectures.

An office mate of mine had brought something up to explain this enigma. If I remember correctly, such an occurrence can only be explained through the Filipino concept of "Balos sa Papa" (Revenge on the father). The concept goes like this and it has something to do with the universe trying to rectify the imbalance caused by man or, more specifically, the horny guy:

So the girlfriend becomes pregnant and the child tends to become a girl. This is to exact revenge on the boyfriend for defying societal norms and succumbing to his carnal desires without marrying his girlfriend first. The boyfriend/father is now condemned to watch over his daughter lest some other guy impregnate her out of wedlock when she is in her teens.

It's important to note that the concept only works if the boyfriend is pressured to stay and take responsibility. As is usually the case, Balos sa Papa is ineffective when the guy in question is more happy to leave the moment he knows someone is carrying his child.

Another hypothesis has something to do with one of the more prevalent methods of birth control: withdrawal.      In premarital sex, there's this understandably intense concern to prevent conception but there are also some guys who prefer doing it without barriers. Those who climax before withdrawing tend to splash their semen on the vaginal walls rather than through the cervix (and into the uterus). Female sperm cells, which are slower yet more hardy than male sperm cells, don't mind the extra distance and are more successful in reaching the egg cell.

Still another hypothesis is that guys unconsciously control the sex of their underlings. In nature, there are animals which can dictate the sex of their offspring based on environmental conditions. For instance, in periods of scarcity, some animal mothers give birth to females because giving birth to weak males is an evolutionary disadvantage. In the same way, guys engaging in premarital sex tend to do so under severe stress, a less-than-ideal environment. In this case, spawning more female sperm cells is a better option for propagating genes than making male sperm cells and the male body responds by doing exactly that.

Again, these are just conjectures but I would be very interested if a study can be done to confirm or deny them.
