Barangay Elections

15 October 2010

I was pleasantly surprised.

Expecting a lot of traffic like the one I saw during the National Elections last May, I was caught off-guard by the laid-back atmosphere of the Barangay elections. In fact, I was over and done with after just fifteen minutes (contrast that to what happened to me last May, when I had to wait the whole day to vote).

I was escorted to my seat and began voting. I guess I was only one out of three voters in the room so I took my time. Unfortunately, the same problem I faced last May haunted me again: I didn't know any of the candidates.

The only hint about the candidates in the ballot forms were their professions. There were businessmen, nannies, drivers, self-employed professionals, teachers and what not. So I opted for the easier path: go vote for the candidates with reputable professions. That included teachers and business people (persons who necessarily must have the administrative acumen to handle a government position, no matter how small).

Sure, I must say I was a bit of an elitist, spurning the populist candidates (the drivers, nannies, istambay etc.) in favor of the ones who could probably perform. But that's me.
